HAPGANGJEONG

Period:17th cnetury

Address:San 221-13, Hapgand-ri, Inje-eup, Inje-gun, Gangwon-do

'HAPGANGJEONG', which is an arbor of many-stories building style, was built in the second year of King Sukjpng's reign(1676 A.D.)during Lee Se-eok Hyeongam's tenure of office and it is known as one of the "Eight Tourist Attractions in Inje".

The name of 'HAPGANGJEONG' came from the name of river which flows in front of the arbor. They called the river as 'HAPGANG'(literally means 'joint river'), because the Naerincheon(stream), which flows from the M.t Odaesan and Bangtaesan in the east, meets Inbukcheon(stream), which flows from M.t Seoraksan and Seohwa area, at the basin of a waterfall of Hongjinpo (the former name is Hapgangnaruteo). The arbor was constructed on a hill where people could enjoy beautiful scene of 'Hapgang' and it was named as 'HAPGANGJEONG'.

The 'HAPGANGJEONG', which was built by labor mobilization of the residen-tiaries of Inje-eup on 1676, seemed to be destroyed by a fire, and after that, it was restored on the thirty-second year of King Yeongjo's reign(1760 A.D.) durign Kim Seon-jae Hyungam's tenure of Office.

The 『Yeojidoseo』on 1760 mentioned that "HAPGANGJEONG' is built as cruciform many-stories building style which has five rooms. "Therefore, we can guess, according to the above record, that the 'HAPGANGJEONG'was an arbor with five rooms in the eighteenth century. After that, it was said that 'HAPGANGJEONG' was restored as an arbor with six rooms.

In modern age, 'HAPGANGJEONG' was demolished due to the bombing during the Korean War, but it was reconstructed as two-stories concrete building with six rooms at the hill of Hapgangnaruteo on Ocotober, 1971. Since 1983, it was used not only as a sacred site to perform the ceremony of Hapgang Cultural Festival, but also as a resting place for residentiaries. It is Known as one of the typical traditional architecture of Inje area.

But 'HAPGANGJEONG' was destroyed again on 1996 because of the construction of a national road. The present 'HAPGANGJEONG' was restored as two-stories wooden building with three rooms in the front and two rooms on the side since the second of June, 1998.

GANGWONDO JUNGANGDAN

Period: The early days in Joseon era-the end of 19th century

Address:San 221-13, Hapgang-ri Inje-eup, Inje gun, Gangwon-do, Republic of Korea

'JUNGANGDAN' is an altar where 'Byeolyeoje'used to be performed during the Joseon era. The center of every province had the altar for 'Byeolyeoje' which was offered to the deities who have passed away under a false accusation or could not be given ancestorworship for any reason, for the purpose of preventing infectious disease or drought.

During the Joseon era. 'Yeoie' was listed under 'Sosa' among the rituals which were offered to various nature deities, and has been performed even at ' Ju and Hyeon' (the unit of sub-district of each province)in the second year of King Jeongjong's reign(1400 A.D.). 'Yeojedan' was constructed in 'Bukgyo', 'Donggyo' and 'Seogyo' outside of palace, where the King carried out the ritual. Generally, the altar was made at the hilly area which is far away from the northern house of government office in 'Ju and Hyeon'. The 'Yeoje' used to be performed three times a year, i.e., the day of 'Cheongmyeong', the fifteenth of July and the first of October, and 'Byeolyeoje' was performed at special place and time in certain area where plague and drought were so serious.

There was a reason to perform 'Yeoje' regularly in the capital as well as other provinces during the Joseon period. The people in that era, who lived mostly on agriculture, considered that the grudge of deities, who have passed away under a false accusation or could not beoffered ancestor worship, causes plague and drought to take place. They, therefore, believed that they are able to overcome those disasters through the ritual to console the deities. In case of national ritual, the King himself composed ritual oration and performed the ritual, where in the case of province, the ritual was mainly supervised under a provincial administrator.

According to 『Jeungbomunheonbigo』, 'Byeolyeoje' was performed in the center of each province, such as Inje of Gangwon-do, Sangju of Gyeongsang-do, Gongju of Chungcheong-do and Gwangju of Jeolla-do royal order in the eighteenth year of King Yeongjo's regin       (1742 A.D.) According to the above record, we identify that 'the 'JUNGANGDAN' at the back of Hapgang-jeong', which was mentioned in Danmyojo, 『Injeeupji』(1843 A.D.), was one of the altars for 'Byeolyeoje' which was performed in the center of each province.

『Gangwondoji』(1941 A.D.)and 『Gwandongeupji』said that "Jungangdan' was built at the back of Hapgangjeong, which was a center of Gangwon-do, and the provincial administrators from eastern and western side of that area used to perform 'Byeolyeoje' till areound 1843 A.D., however, it was destroyed around 1901 A.D. and remained as ruins".

After that, 'JUNGANGDAN' was restored in the twenty-forth of July, 2001 by the cultural Properties repair and restoration rule on the base of 『Gukjooryeui』and Yeongjocheok which was standard measure for architectures of the eighteenth century. The present 'JUNGANGDAN', which is made of granite, takes form of a square table of 6.51m sides, and 0.775m height.
